Prof. Dr. Dirk Vanheule holds law degrees from the universities of Ghent (Licentiate, 1989), Toronto (LL.M. 1991) and Antwerp (Dr.iur. 2001). He is professor of law at the Faculty of Law in Antwerp where he teaches legal methodology, comparative constitutional law, public procedural law and migration and asylum law. He is vice-director the Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS) at the University of Antwerp. Since 1990 he has also been a member of the Ghent Bar, practising in the field of administrative, constitutional and immigration law.
Justice Katelijne Declerck has worked almost exclusively in the area of legal protection of refugees since 1979 while in Thailand during the South East Asian refugee crisis. After one year at UNICEF, she returned to UNHCR from 1981 untill 1993, when she was appointed judge in the Belgian Appeals Commission for Refugees. Currently, she is a member of council of the International Association of Refugee Law Judges.
